air - that's a pair!

Updated: Jan 29

Phase Three: j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air

Words: join, soil, boil, toil, foil, tinfoil

Revisit and Review:

Place some tricky word cards on your stairs. Get your child to throw the beanbag and read the word on the step it lands on. If you don't have a beanbag you could use some scrunched-up tin foil or a pair of socks.

Next, call out a word and ask them to try to make the beanbag land on the right step. You could also play this game using sound cards.

Use the air sound card and introduce the sound. Segment stairs together s-t-air-s.

Reading

Words to use: 1 x card with air and 2 x fair, hair, lair, pair, chair.

If your child is confident with blending, you could include some 2-syllable words e.g. airport and aircraft.

Write out two sets of words containing air. You also need to include one card with the air sound written on, but don't make a pair for this card.

Deal the cards between the players. Each player should blend the sounds to read the words and then remove any pairs of words that they have.

Then take it in turns to choose a card from the other player. When you have picked a card, read the word. If you have a matching card put both cards into the pile of pairs. If you don't have a matching card keep it in your hand.

See who can get rid of their cards first. Try not to be the person left with the air card.

Writing

Take it in turns to choose a card from the pairs game and show it to the other person. They can look at it for 5 seconds then they have to write it without looking. If they spell it correctly they win the pair. Swap roles. Encourage them to segment the word to help them to spell e.g. h-air. When it’s your turn to spell, you could make a mistake and see if your child spots it. They love it when the adult gets it wrong and they get to correct them!
