Build Your Own Playdough Maze

This playdough maze is a fun way to introduce the shapes needed to form the Zig-Zag Monster letters. You could draw a zig-zag pattern on the box lid for your child to create using playdough or let your child create their own.

You will need:

  • A shoe box lid/baking tray

  • Playdough

  • A marble/tinfoil

Make some playdough snakes. Model how to move both hands in a circular motion to roll a ball of playdough. Then place it on the table and use both hands to roll it into a snake. Vary the pressure to make sure the playdough snake is even and use your fingertips as it gets thinner. This is a great way to strengthen hand muscles and work on the fine motor skills needed for writing. Work together to make a few playdough snakes.

Arrange the playdough snakes to create a maze by gently pressing the playdough so it sticks to the box lid/baking tray. Create a maze for each other. Make sure to arrange the playdough snakes on the maze you make so they lay diagonally as this will support the strokes needed for the Zig-Zag Monster letters.

Place the marble at the start of the maze and gently tilt the box/baking tray to make the marble roll. Can you get it to the end of the maze? If you don’t have a marble, you could roll some tin foil to create a ball. We used a ball from our Hungry Hippos game.
