k - cardboard keyboard

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in nursery will be learning to:

  • Take part in simple pretend play, using an object to represent something else. (Expressive Arts and Design)

Children in reception will be learning to:

  • Form lower-case and capital letters correctly. (Literacy)

What you need:

  • A cardboard box

  • Scissors

  • PVA glue and spreader

  • Pen

  • Parcel Tape

  • Dry wipe pen

Benji has seen Craig and I work on our laptops at home lots during lockdowns so he loved making his own laptop.

We folded a piece of cardboard in half to create the laptop. Then we cut out small squares of cardboard and stuck them on to make a keyboard. I added the letters we have covered so far during summer camp.

We also added a mouse pad, a key board and a power button.

I covered the top section in parcel tape so that we could write on the screen and then rub it back off. He wanted to write his name so we added the extra letters we needed to the keyboard. As he typed the letters I wrote it on the laptop screen.

Say it and write it

He decided to take his laptop into the garden so that he could work outside! I wrote the letter k on the screen and he used his finger to rub it out.

We talked about the things you can use a laptop for. He knows that you can watch things on a laptop too so he drew a picture. He drew a stormy sea with thunder and a boat.
