d - dinosaur egg

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in reception will be learning to:

  • Read individual letters by saying the sounds for them. (Literacy)

What you need:

  • Your nest from the Make a Nest activity

  • A toy dinosaur

  • A kinder egg insert

  • Letter d - you could use a magnetic letter or a piece of paper with the letter written on.

Hear it and say it

While your child isn't looking, place the toy dinosaur and the egg with a letter d inside into the nest. When they discover the nest has something in, talk about whether it was what they were expecting to find. Who has used the nest? A dinosaur! Talk about what sound they can hear at the start of dinosaur.

See it and say it

When the open the egg, tell them that this is what the letter d looks like and tell them the sound it makes.

Extension - You could hide some more magnetic letters in some soil. Can they dig in the dirt to find them?

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
