Down and Up

Updated: Feb 7, 2023

All of the letters in our first letter family contain vertical lines (the water spout). The letter formation cards contain phrases, containing directional language, to help your child to form them. I have added arrows to the letter formation cards as a visual reminder.

However, we need to make sure that they understand what these words really mean as they may have heard them used in many different ways.

For example:

  • down the road

  • slow down

  • his temperature has gone down

  • upside down

  • calm down

  • grown-up

  • wake up

  • I will pick you up at hometime

  • makeup

  • a cross (x)

The challenge this week is to see what opportunities you can find to use the words down, up and across during your everyday activities. Make sure to discuss the directional language as you play.

Here are some examples you could try:

  • You could head to the playground and slide down a pole or a slide.

  • Throw a coin down a wishing well.

  • Pull a string on a toy or pull down on a light pull.

  • Climb up and down playground equipment.

  • Climb up and down the stairs.

  • Jump up and down in puddles.

  • Go up and down on a seesaw.

  • Climb across a balance beam or piece of playground equipment.

  • Throw a ball up and watch it come back down. Stand opposite and throw it across to each other.

  • Look up in the sky for aeroplanes or stars.

  • Read the book Look Up by Nathan Byron

There are also lots of activities to try in the Handwriting Club too.

If you have a go at any of the activities or think of any more examples, and share photos on social media, I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
