e - elephants never forget

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in reception will be learning to:

  • Read individual letters by saying the sounds for them. (Literacy)

What you need:

  • 3 cups

  • magnetic letters/pieces of paper with letters written on

  • Flashcard/paper with the letter e written on it

Hear it and say it

Ask your child if they know any facts about elephants. What does elephant start with? e. Some people say 'elephants never forget'. We are going to play a game to see if we have a good memory. Start by saying a letter sound e.g. e. Ask them to repeat it. Then add another letter sound e.g. e, n. Can they repeat both sounds. Continue to play adding an extra sound each time. How many sounds can they remember without forgetting?

See it and say it

Show them what the letter e looks like. Chose 3 magnetic letters and place one under each cup. Ask your child to lift the cups to find the letter e. Can they remember which one is the letter e and which cup it is underneath? You could leave a flashcard next to them so they can check by matching the letters.

Play again, asking your child to hide the letter e under a cup and different letters under the other two cups. They could mix the cups around to change the position of the letters. Watch carefully as they move the cups so you don't forget which cup the letter e is underneath!

Can the other player find the e? If they find a different letter they should try to say its letter sound.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
