f, ff - fire at the fence

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in reception will be learning to:

  • Form lower-case and capital letters correctly. (Literacy)

What you need:

  • Chalk

  • Water pistol

  • Flashcard with an e written on

  • Paintbrush

Write some of the letters from the previous activities on a fence or a wall using chalk. Get them to fire their water pistol at the fence. Can they say the sound when they hit a letter?

Call out one of the sounds and see if they can fire their water pistol at the correct letter. If they are unsure of what the sound looks like, show them the flashcard and see if they can find the matching letter on the fence.

Say it and write it

Write the letter f on the fence using chalk. Explain that sometimes the f sound is made using two of the letters. This is called a digraph. The two letters work together to make one sound e.g. off. Can they can wash the letters off? Show your child where to start the letter and get them to paint over it using water.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
