f, ff - flower soup

Updated: Oct 22, 2021

Children in reception will be learning to:

  • Read individual letters by saying the sounds for them. (Literacy)

What you could use:

  • Pots, pans, containers.

  • Spoon/Stick

  • Flowers

  • Water

My children love to make flower soup. It's a great way to make use of dead headed flowers or flowers from a vase that are on their way out.

We made our flower soup in the garden but you could set up a water tray inside. We added some extra ingredients like mud to change the colour of the soup and grass to sprinkle on top.

Hear it and say it

As you play, talk about what the objects start with e.g. flower - f. Explain that sometimes the f sound is made using two of the letters. This is called a digraph. The two letters work together to make one sound e.g. sniff. Sniff your flower soup. Does it smell nice?

See it and say it

You could write recipe for flour soup. As you write the ingredients down ask your child what they start with. As you write flowers should them what an f looks like.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
