g- guess the object

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in nursery will be learning to:

  • Develop their phonological awareness, so that they can recognise words with the same initial sound, such as money and mother (Literacy).

What you need:

  • A container/box/cover

  • A feely bag

  • Objects including ones that begin with g.

Gather a selection of objects including some objects that start with g. Make sure that the objects make a hard g sound e.g. girl, goat, gold and glue and not the soft g sound e.g. giraffe. Name each object as you put move them into a container or place them under a cover.

Hide one of the objects in a feely bag. I used the cotton bag that comes with the Phonics Box. If you don't have a feely bag, you could use a large sock. Ask your child to keep their eyes closed as they feel the object. Can they guess what the object is? When they have guessed they can pull the object out to see if they were correct.

Then your child can hide one of the objects in the feely bag for you to try to guess. As you reveal the objects talk about what the objects begin with. Make a pile of any objects that start with g. What sounds do the other objects begin with?

Extension - You could include objects that have a g sound at the end. Then sort the objects into two piles - those with a g sound and those without. Objects could include a bag, pig, peg and a mug.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
