Phase 3 - j

Revisit and Review

Spread out some sound flashcards on the ground. Pick sounds your child has already been taught, so they can revisit and practise them. Say a sound and ask your child to jump on the correct card.

Introduce the j sound. Can your child hear it at the start of jump? Children sometimes get j and i mixed up because they look quite similar. Look closely at the two letters and talk about what is the same (both have a dot) and what is different (j has a long tail). Discuss that insects are small like the i and jumps are really big like the j.

Hide the cards behind your back and show one of them. If it is the j card they should jump on the spot. If it is the i card they should crawl like an insect. Repeat a few times.

Reading

Put three sound cards on the floor to make a CVC word (consonant vowel consonant). Ask your child to jump along and say the sounds as they land on the card. When they get to the end ask them to blend the sounds and say the word. E.g. j-e-t, jet.

Spelling

Make a word using three cards and then shuffle the cards. Ask your child to rearrange the sound cards to make the word. Encourage them to say the word and then sound it out e.g. jug, j-u-g.

Words: jam, jet, jog, Jack, Jill, Jen.
