l, ll - layered jelly

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in nursery will be learning to:

  • Talk about the differences between materials and changes they notice. (Understanding of the World).

What you need:

  • Different coloured jelly*

  • Jug

  • Water and kettle

  • Spoon

  • Containers for jelly

I thought layered jelly would be a great thing to make after learning about the letter l. You have to leave each layer to set, so this is an activity to come back to throughout the day!

*If you use glitter jelly make sure to use this one first because you make it with hot water. The other packets were made with half hot water and half cold water. The lukewarm liquid means that it won't melt the first layer of jelly you are pouring it on top of.

Can your child spot the ll digraph on the packaging? Get them to help by pouring the jelly crystals into a jug. Talk about what they look like. An adult should add the hot water. Look at what has happened to the jelly crystals now. Explain that they have dissolved and the colour of the water has changed. An adult should pour the jelly into moulds. We used ice cream sundae glasses and drinking glasses. Then put it in the fridge to set.

Once set, make the second jelly and pour it on top. Repeat once more so that you have 3 different coloured layers. Talk about how the jelly has changed since it has been in the fridge.

Once our jelly was set we added spray cream and sprinkles.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
