u - mud cafe

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in nursery will be learning to:

  • Take part in simple pretend play, using an object to represent something else even though they are not similar. (Expressive Art and Design)

Children in reception will be learning to:

  • Read individual letters by saying the sounds for them. (Literacy)

  • Develop storylines in their pretend play. (Expressive Art and Design)

What you could use:

  • pot and pans

  • cups

  • spoons

  • mud

  • water

  • log slices

  • flowers, grass and leaves

You don't need a mud kitchen to create a mud cafe. We use an old shed door and a small table but you could also set one up on the floor. Collect mud, grass, leaves and flowers to use as ingredients then set to work preparing drinks and snacks for the cafe!

Pizza:

We used log slices to create pizzas. We spread the sauce on (mud) and added various toppings.

Sandwiches/Burgers:

Use log slices for the bread then add the fillings.

Pancakes:

We used some old tiles to create a hob and cooked our pancakes (log slices). Benji loved trying to flip them. He made syrup using mud and added bacon (leaves). He also cooked egg on toast!

Hear it and say it

As we cooked different snacks I sounded some of the words out e.g. mud, m-u-d and cup, c-u-p.

See it and say it

We had a go at using chalk to make a menu for the cafe. I wrote mud cafe at the top. I pointed to the letters in mud and told him what sounds they made. I wrote down some of the things that we had made and Benji drew some pictures of the items.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
