u - mud paint

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in reception will be learning to:

  • Form lower-case and capital letters correctly. (Literacy)

What you need:

  • Mud

  • Water

  • Pot

  • Paintbrush

Collect some mud in a container. Add water and mix it to make mud paint! Use a paintbrush to write and draw with the paint on the pavement or fences.

Say it and write it

I showed Benji the m, u and d flashcards. I sounded them out and blended them to make mud. He had a go at writing the letters using the paintbrush and mud.

He found it tricky to write the u so we made a rhyme to help - down went the rain, up went the umbrella, down came the rain. I also painted some of the letters and he painted over the top of them.

Children don't need to be able to write letters before the start Reception. Let them use the mud to draw pictures or some of the pre-writing shapes.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
