ng - ping-pong sounds

Updated: Oct 25, 2023

Phase Three: j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng

Revisit

Place 6 cups or mugs on the floor in a triangle shape. Place a sound card in each cup and leave a pile of spare cards by the side. You could play this game using any sounds or words that your child has been taught to help them recall them.

Take it in turns to throw a ping-pong ball into a cup. If you don't have a ping-pong ball you could use a ball of tin foil or a pair of socks. If your ping-ping ball lands in a cup, say the sound. If you get it correct keep the card and place a new sound from the pile into the cup. Keep playing until you run out of sound cards.

Reading

Place three cups in a row and put a sound card underneath each one to make a CVC word (consonant - vowel - consonant). In these words, the final consonant is made using a digraph, where n and g are working together to make one sound.

Ask your child to drop a ping-pong ball (or a coin/ball of tinfoil) into each cup as they say the sound. When they get to the end they should blend the sounds to read the word e.g. w-i-ng, wing.

Words you could use:

sing (s-i-ng)

king (k-i-ng)

rung (r-u-ng)

hang (h-a-ng)

thing (th-i-ng)

Spelling

Place the letter cards shown in the picture next to the cups. Say a word e.g. wing and ask your child to repeat it.

They should sound out the word, dropping a ping-pong ball into each cup as they say the sounds e.g. w-i-ng, wing. Sound the word out again and put the sound cards under each cup. Alternatively, your child could write the sounds on paper or a whiteboard.

Words you could use:

sing (s-i-ng)

wing (w-i-ng)

long (l-o-ng)

hang (h-a-ng)

thing (th-i-ng)

sung (s-u-ng)
