o - obstacle course

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in reception will be learning to:

  • Read individual letters by saying the sounds for them. (Literacy)

What you could use:

  • magnetic letters/flashcards

  • objects to move over/under/around e.g. chairs and cushions.

Hear it and say it

Before you start the activity set up an obstacle course. Tell your child you have put some letters on the chair. I used all of the sounds we have covered so far during summer camp. What does on start with? Ask them if they would like to do an obstacle course. Can they hear the sound at the start of obstacle? It's o again!

See it and say it

Before you start, see if they recognise any of the letters on the chair. Can they remember the sounds they make? Can they spot a new letter? Show them the letter o. Tell them it is called o (use the letter name) and it makes and o sound like at the start of obstacle.

Say a sound and ask children to find it. Can they carry the letter as the go across the obstacle course and put it into a tray/container at the end?

As they travel along the obstacle course, encourage them to make the letter sound as they move.

As they run back to the start, say another sound and see if they can find it. Keep playing until they have moved all of the letters.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
