p - parties and presents

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in nursery will be learning to:

  • Develop their phonological awareness, so that they can recognise words with the same initial sound, such as money and mother (Literacy)

What you need:

  • Wrapping paper/tissue paper

  • Scissors

  • Sellotape

  • A selection of objects beginning with p e.g. pushchair, panda, penguin, potato, pliers (Or click here to download some photos of objects)

Before we started to play, I wrapped up the objects in tissue paper.

Tell them it is one of their soft toy's birthday. Set up a party (p-p-party!) for them. You could put a tablecloth on the table and have some pretend birthday cake. Tell them their toy wants some help to open their presents. Can they hear what presents starts with? You could also wrap the presents up in different layers to create a pass the parcel game.

As you open the presents, talk about what the object starts with. After a couple of turns they might work out that the presents all start with p. Before you open the next present ask if they can guess what could be inside the next present. Can they think of any objects that start with p? You could extend this activity by including objects that start with s, a or t and then sort them by their initial sounds once you have unwrapped them all.

After you have finished unwrapping presents they could wrap up toys to give to their soft toy. This is a great way to develop pre-writing skills to help get their hands ready to write. They could also make a birthday card.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
