Pre-Writers Club: Baby Rattles

Updated: Nov 23, 2021

Phase One: Aspect Two - Instrumental Sounds

Objective: To listen to and appreciate the difference between sounds made with instruments

What you need:

  • Baby Rattles

  • Alternatively, you could add rice or pasta to an empty bottle to create your own rattles.

Start the game by making a sound with one of the rattles. Pass the rattle to your child and see if they can use it to make the same sound or pattern of sounds that you made. Start with a single shake, and then gradually increase the difficulty by having different rhythms.

Skills:

The activities in Aspect Two develop speaking and listening skills through the use of musical instruments. Children begin to notice the difference between sounds which helps them when they start to learn different letter sounds. When they begin to spell words in reception, they will need to be able to identify what letter sounds they can hear.

Auditory Memory - Remembering and repeating a rhythm develops the skills needed to hold sounds in their head so they can blend them together to make a word. This skill is needed when children start to read.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
