Pre-Writers Club: Bus Fare

Updated: Nov 23, 2021

Physical Development - Moving & Handling

(30-50 months): Holds pencil between thumb and two fingers, no longer using whole hand grasp.

(40-60+ months): Shows a preference for a dominant hand.

Maths - Shape, Space & Measure

40-60+ months): Beginning to use everyday language related to money.

What you need:

  • Coins

  • Paper

  • Wax crayons (broken ones are best!)

When we pretended to get on a bus we used coins to pay for our bus tickets. We looked at the coins and talked about the shape, size and colour. I told Benji was the coins were called. Then I showed him how to do a wax rubbing of the coins which he thought was amazing!

Skills:

Pencil Grasp Using broken pieces of wax crayon encourage children to grip using their thumb, index finger and middle finger rather than using a whole hand grasp. This helps to develop the tripod grip which is the most efficient way to hold a pencil.

Bilateral Control Doing wax rubbings requires children to use their dominant hand to use the crayon and their 'helping hand' to stop the paper from moving. When they write they will use this skill; their dominant hand will hold the pencil and their other hand will keep the paper still as they write.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
