Pre-Writers Club: Pancake Sensory Tray

Updated: Nov 23, 2021

Physical Development - Moving & Handling (30-50 months): Draws lines and circles using gross motor movements.

What you could use:

  • flour

  • wooden play food/empty milk and egg cartons – pancake ingredients (milk, egg, flour)

  • frying pan, mixing bowl, sieve

  • utensils – sieve, whisk, spatula, measuring spoons

  • a real lemon

I decided to embrace this as a messy activity and set it up in a tuff tray to contain the mess but you could use a smaller amount of flour and put the tray on top of a wipe able tablecloth down. We used the utensils to explore the flour e.g. sieving and scooping it.

Then we explored different ways to make marks in the flour. When we finished with the activity, I used the leftover flour from the this activity to make playdough for the pretend pancakes activity. I mixed it in the tray to make it easier to clean up this activity.

Skills:

Pre-writing shape - You could encourage your child to make marks or draw shapes in the flour.

Pre-writing shapes are a key component of the pre-writing skills. Children need to be able to form these strokes as a precursor to writing letters and numbers. You can support your child by modelling how to draw the shapes using a top-to-bottom and left-to-right approach, because this is how letters are typically formed.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
