Pre-Writers Club: Traffic Light Game

Updated: Nov 23, 2021

Phase One: Aspect One - Environmental sounds

This phase is about helping children to become aware of the sounds around them and to develop good listening skills. They need this skill to be able to listen to a word and sound it out for spelling later on.

Physical Development - Moving and Handling (40-60+ months):

Negotiates space successfully when playing racing and chasing games with other children, adjusting speed or changing direction to avoid obstacles.

What you need:

  • Scooters/bikes (optional)

As your child plays on their scooter or bike or runs around get them to listen carefully. If they hear you shout 'red' they must stop and freeze. If they hear you shout 'green' they can start riding or running again.

Skills:

Auditory Discrimination - Saying red or green rather than showing them the colours means they need to use auditory discrimination rather than visual discrimination. Being able to hear the difference between the sounds will help them to develop the skills needed to be able to hear sounds and blend them to make words.

Visual Discrimination - You could play this game by holding up a red or green circle. If they see the green circle they can go and if they see the red circle they can stop. This version of the game encourages your child to make sense of what they see. This skill will help children to recognise differences in numbers, letters and shapes which will help them to write them.

You can click the heart on the blog post to keep track of the activities that you have tried. I would love to hear how you get on in the comments section below. If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
