Rainbow Spellings

I like to split spellings into four steps. All you need for this week is a piece of paper, some coloured felts/crayons and your child's spelling list.

Day 1 - Read the words.

Write the words on paper and leave a selection of coloured pencil crayons or felt tips next to them.

Start by reading the words together. See if your child knows any of them.

Discuss what they mean. Are there any words your child already knows how to spell? Can they spot any digraphs/trigraphs in the words? They could add sound lines/buttons or circle any tricky parts that they need to remember.

Day 2 - Look and Copy.

Use the piece of paper from the previous day. Say a word and see if your child can find it. Ask them to choose a colour and write the word on top of your writing. If the word is decodable, get them to sound it out as they write it. If not, identify any tricky parts.

Repeat for the other words using different colours.

You could also use different colours on the same word to create rainbow writing.

Day 3 - Cover and Make.

Repeat the activity but this time look at the word, then cover it up and write it underneath. Once your child has written the word, help them to check if they are correct. If not, identify their mistake and look at the correct spelling.

Day 4 - Spell it. Say the word and see whether your child can write it down. Your child could use a different coloured pencil/felt pen for each letter. Focus on any words they found tricky yesterday.
