k - rhyming keys

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in nursery will be learning to:

  • Develop their phonological awareness, so that they can recognise words with the same initial sound, such as money and mother (Literacy).

What you need:

  • Rhyming Pairs Printable

  • Cardboard

  • Glue

  • Hair bobbles/string

  • Padlocks and keys (Available in Poundland)

Print out the matching pairs and glue them to some cardboard. Cut around them and make a hole in each one.

Attach one of the pictures to the padlock and attach its rhyming pair to the matching set of keys. Repeat with the other pairs. Make sure not to mix up the keys and padlocks else the activity won't work .

Hang the pictures up around your house or garden and set your child a challenge to find all 6 pictures. As they find the pictures, count how many they have found.

Once they have found they all ask if they can try to unlock the padlocks. Ask them to pick a padlock and a key. Explain that pictures need to rhyme to unlock the padlock. Before they try, get them to guess if the key will work or not. Win and cat don't rhyme so they key didn't work in this lock.

If the key didn't open the padlock ask them to see if the can spot the rhyming picture. Keep going until they have found all of the matching rhyming pairs and have unlocked all of the padlocks. Using the key to unlock the padlock is a great way to practise fine motor skills.

Skills:

Rhyming - Exploring rhyming words helps children to hear the difference between speech sounds which is an important skill. If children know the spelling pattern for cat it will help them to spell other rhyming words e.g. mat.

Extension - You could also play this game using letters and pictures and ask your child to match the picture to it's initial sound.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
