ck - rock painting

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in reception will be learning to:

  • Form lower-case and capital letters correctly. (Literacy)

What you could use:

The chalk pastels were kindly gifted by Nexus. I really like them because they are refillable. They can be used on chalkboards, whiteboards, windows, paper, cardboard, wood, metal and removed with some surfaces with a damp cloth.

Say it and write it

Painting rocks has grown in popularity and lots of people hide their finished rocks for people to find. However, for the activity I have chosen different ways to mark make on the rocks that won't be permanent. This gives children the freedom to explore strokes and letter formation without the pressure of needing to get it correct because they can wash it away.

We used chalk pastels which could be washed off with water and a scrubbing brush. You could also use a paintbrush with just water to make marks. If you leave the rock in the sun it will dry and you can decorate it again.

I showed Benji the ck flashcard and he had a go at making the letters. He found the c easier to make than the k. Drawing pictures on the rocks instead of letters is a great way to get their hands used to making the different strokes needed to form letters. So we didn't worry too much about writing the letters and just enjoyed designing pictures and turning the rocks into different animals.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
