Spelling Splat

As the weather warms up, this is a fun way to practise spellings.

You will need:

  • a list of spellings

  • chalk

  • a sponge/sponge ball/pair of socks

  • a bowl of water

Ask your child to look at the list and copy them onto the pavement using chalk. Ask them to read the word then say the letter names as they write them down. Can they spot any digraphs/trigraphs in the words e.g. the ph making a f sound?

Then call out one of the words from the list and see if your child can throw the wet sponge/ball at the word. This will help them to recognise what the word should look like. You could add a challenge e.g. can you splat a word that contains the wh digraph or a word with 4 letters.

Then play splat spelling. Stand above the word and try to splat each letter in turn e.g. stand above the word dolphin and say d then try to plat the d, then say o and try to plat theo, etc until all of the word has been splated.

You could take turns to splat a word. Can the other person guess what letter is hiding underneath the sponge?

I hope you have fun splatting those spellings!
