  • Card

  • Yellow paint

  • Tray/plate for paint

  • Paint brush/Sponge stamper

  • Googly eyes

  • Orange card/paper/foam

  • Yellow feather

As Spring has started and Easter is approaching, I thought I would include an activity about chicks. This song is loved by the children at my school. It is really catchy, so they pick it up quickly and they love doing the dance! You could start by listening to the song then talking about how chicks hatch from eggs.

Begin by letting your child squeeze the paint into the tray. Fold the card in half and get them to decorate it using the yellow paint. Let them explore by using paintbrushes, their fingers and sponges. You could encourage them to make try making circles (one of the pre-writing shapes) but it doesn't really matter what they draw on the card. Once they have decorated the card, leave it to dry.

Get them to add googly eyes, a beak and some yellow feathers to create chicks.

These cards would be perfect for giving to friends and family for Easter.

Skills:

Hand Strength – Squeezing the paint develops the muscles needed to control a pencil when writing. Strong hands and fingers means it will be easier for your child to hold a pencil for longer periods of time before fatigue sets in.

Pincer Grip – Picking up the googly eyes using their thumb and forefinger practises the action that is necessary for holding and manipulating a pencil.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
