Tin Can Alley

You will need:

  • empty tin cans (one for each letter in the word)

  • a beanbag or pair of socks

  • magnetic letters (choose the letters that are in the words)

Choose one of the words from your child's spelling list and ask them to read it to you. Model how to sound it out then stick one magnetic letter to each tin can to spell the word. When you have finished ask them to look at the word and check if you were right. Then they can throw the bean bag at the tin cans to try to knock your word down. Play again but swap roles.

Support:

If the word contains digraphs/trigraphs where 2/3 letters work together to make one sound, you could stick these on the same tin.
