o - tongue twisters

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in nursery will be learning to:

  • Develop their phonological awareness, so that they can recognise words with the same initial sound, such as money and mother (Literacy).

  • Develop storylines in their pretend play. (Expressive Arts and Design)

What you could use:

  • Sand/Kinetic Sand

  • Tray - we used the Phonics Box container

  • Sea shells

  • Toy figures

We set up a seaside small world tray. We built sandcastles, then created a sea shell shop.

As we played I said the following tongue twister to Benji. He had a go at saying it and found it hilarious when he got it wrong!

She sells sea-shells on the sea-shore.

We carried on playing and adding different storylines. We tried to do another sea themed tongue twister using the o sound.

The Octopus and Oliver Went to the Opera in October.

Skills:

Alliteration - Alliteration is where words start with the same letter or sound. During Phase One phonics children listen to the beginning of words and hear the difference or similarity between them. They begin to explore how different sounds are articulated and practise making them. This helps when they start to listen to the sounds in words to help spell during Phase Two.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
