Train Track Letters

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in reception will be learning to:

  • Form lower-case and capital letters correctly. (Literacy)

What you need:

  • Train track

  • Train

  • Flashcards/pieces of paper with the letters s, a, t.

If you don't have a train track set you could create pieces by cutting up a cardboard box. You will need a mixture of straight pieces and curved pieces.

Say it and write it

Show your child the letter t and remind them what sound it makes. Can they use the train track to make the letter. As they build it talk about the pieces they need e.g. this part is straight, at the bottom we will need a curved piece.

Drive the train along the letter t starting from the top. Then take the train off and place it in position 2 and drive it across the track.

Use the pieces of track to make the letters from earlier in the week. Think about where the train will start its journey and where it will stop.

Top Tips:

Letter Formation - We need to make sure that children are developmentally ready to use a pencil before we teach them to write. They should have well developed fine motor skills, hand and finger strength and visual-motor skills. Creating the letters using pieces of track and forming the letters by driving the train is a great way to develop the correct letter formation at the same time as developing the skills needed to be able to hold a pencil.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
