v - rev your engine

Updated: Oct 8, 2023

Phase 3 - j, v

The v sound sound can be a bit tricky to say. Model how to make the sound by gently placing your teeth on your lower lip and breathing out as you use your voice to make the v. You should feel vibrations on your lower lip when making the sound. You can get your child to look in a mirror or use the selfie camera on your phone so they can watch themselves do it.

Practise making the v sound by getting your child to drive a toy vehicle around, revving the engine as they start to move it "vvvv, vvvv, vvvv".

Reading

Place some sound cards on the floor and drive the van past the sounds. As the toy vehicle passes each card say the sound. Drive the vehicle past again but this time blend the sounds to read the word.

Words to use: van, vet, vat, Vic, visit.

Spelling

Spread the sound cards out on the floor or a car mat. Say a word and ask your child to repeat it. Ask your child to drive the vehicle around to collect the first sound they need. Sound it out again, fetch the next sound and repeat until they have found all of the sounds to make the word.

Sound cards: use v, a, n, e, t, i

Words: van, vet, vat, Vic
