Pre-Writers Club: Soapy Snow!

What you need:

  • Milk carton

  • Washing up liquid

  • Water

  • Tray

During the Summer, I discovered a quick hack for making foam while I was washing out the recycling. I swilled a milk carton with some washing up liquid and water and when I tried to tip it out there was so much foam! During the heatwave this hack was perfect for water play. We set up a cafe and added frothy milk to the drinks.

Now it is winter, the foam hack can be used to make pretend snow! Simply, add a small amount of water and a squirt of washing up liquid to the milk carton. Make sure the lid is fastened tightly and let your child shake it up and down until it forms a foam.

Pour the foam into the tray to make a snowy scene and add some toys. We added a family of polar bears but Daisy from Five Minute Mum recently combined the soapy foam with some Duplo to make a snowy village which looked fab.

You can also create the foamy soap using an empty washing up bottle.

As you squeeze the bottle it create more 'snow'. Benji loved making it snow on the polar bears. If you squeeze the air out of the washing up bottle then let go as you hold it under the water then it will suck the water back into the bottle which can be shook to make new foam. Using this trick kept the play going for even longer.

Make sure to pick some of the foam up using your fingers then blow it to make it snow. Benji thought this was hilarious.

Skills:

Finger Strengthening – Squeezing the washing up liquid bottle develops the muscles needed to control a pencil when writing. Strong hands and fingers means it will be easier for your child to hold a pencil for longer periods of time before fatigue sets in. Learning how to squeeze things will also get your child’s hands ready to use tools like scissors.
