Phonics is a method of teaching children how to read and write by matching what they hear to what they see written down.
During Phase 1 your child will explore sounds. In Reception, your child will start Phase 2 where they will begin to match spoken sounds to individual letters or groups of letters that represent one sound.

Phonics is the prime approach used in schools to teach early reading and is taught daily. It is taught systematically which means the sounds aren't taught in alphabetical order.

By teaching them in a different order, we can begin to make words straight away. The Phase 2 Words Pack contains lots of words made up of Phase 2 sounds.

A written language is basically a kind of code. By teaching phonics we help children to crack that code. When children understand how the letters correspond to sounds they can use their phonics knowledge to sound out and read the words e.g. s-a-p, sap.
