igh - how high?

Updated: Jan 17

Phase Three: j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh

Revisit

Before you start, use a dry wipe pen to write some sounds onto Duplo bricks. I chose the Phase 3 sounds that are listed at the top of the post but you could use any sounds that your child has been taught so far. The whiteboard pen does rub off so try to pick the blocks up at the sides and make sure to rub it off when you have finished playing.

Alternatively, you could cut up toilet rolls to create blocks.

Use the blocks to build a tower. Say the sound as you add each block. How high (h-igh) can you make the tower? You could take turns to add blocks or work together.

Reading

Introduce the igh sound. Can they hear it in the word high? Make the word using the blocks and model how to read it by sounding it out then blending the sounds e.g. h-igh, high. Make some other words and ask your child to read them e.g. sight, light, might.

Spelling

Arrange some blocks for your child to use. Say a word and ask them to make it using the blocks. They should say the word, sound it out, then put the blocks in the correct order e.g. sight, s-igh-t.

Here are some Phase 3 words that you could use. You will need to add more letter blocks for some of the words.

Phase 3 Words: high, sigh, light, might, sight.
