igh - how high?

Updated: May 2, 2020

Before you start you need to write some sounds on to some building blocks. You could use a whiteboard pen to write on Duplo. Alternatively, you could cut up toilet rolls to create blocks.

If your child is confident with Phase 3 I have include some ways to turn this into a Phase 4 activity at the end of this blog post.

Revisit and Review

Challenge your child to build a tower. They need to say the sound on each block as they add it. How high (h-igh) can they make their tower? You could take it in turns to add blocks or each create a tower to see how can make the highest one. I chose the Phase 3 sounds that are introduced before the igh sound but you could use any sounds that your child has learnt so far. This helps them to remember them. The whiteboard pen does rub off so try to pick the blocks up at the sides.

Introduce the igh sound. Can they hear it in the word high? Make the word using the blocks and model how to read it e.g. h-igh. Make some other words and ask your child to read them e.g. sigh, light, might.

Arrange some blocks for your child to use. Say a word and ask them to make it using the blocks. They should say the word, sound it out, then put the blocks in the correct order.

Here are some Phase 3 words that you could use. You will need to add more letter blocks for some of the words. Phase 3 Words: high, sigh, light, might, night, right, sight, fight, tight.

If your child is confident with Phase 3, you could adapt this activity and include some Phase 4 words. These words contain two consonants together that make their own sounds rather than one sound like a digraph.

Phase 4 words:

flight (f-l-igh-t)

fright (f-r-igh-t)

bright (b-r-igh-t)

slight (s-l-igh-t)

You could also use a two syllable word e.g. starlight. Break the word up into syllables e.g. star/light. Then sound out each syllable e.g. star is s-t-ar and light is l-igh-t.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and use #miniwritersclub and let me know who you get on.
