Incy Wincy Spider Foam Shapes Activity

Updated: Oct 25, 2023

This is a fun way to introduce the nursery rhyme through play. You could set this activity up outside on a sunny day or you could stick the foam shapes to the side of your bath/shower screen.

What you need:

  • Sheets of foam

  • Scissors

  • Water

Cut a drain pipe, spider, raindrops and sunshine out of foam.

You could get your child to help cut out the sun. Draw around a circular object and then cut out a circle. Let your child snip around the edge of the foam using child-friendly scissors. We use Easi-Grip scissors, which have a looped handle that reopens the blades after the pressure is released. They make cutting much easier for young children who might be developing their hand control and grip. You could support your child by holding the foam and turning it around so they can keep the scissors facing the same direction.

Use water to stick the shapes to a window, shower screen or the side of the bath.

Moves the shapes as you sing Incy Wincy Spider to act out the nursery rhyme.

Skills:

Choose suitable scissors for your child. If they are left-handed try left-handed scissors. If they find it hard to open and close regular scissors try spring-loaded scissors or Easi-Grip scissors. Choose scissors with rounded ends and make sure they are sharp enough to cut otherwise it will be frustrating for your child. Teach your child scissor safety and supervise them when they are using them. Snipping playdough is another good way to start practising scissor skills. If your child is just beginning to use scissors, then start with small snips rather than things that need a couple of cuts.
