ck - kick the ball

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in reception will be learning to:

  • Read individual letters by saying the sounds for them. (Literacy)

What you could use:

  • Chalk

  • Cones or markers to make a goal - jumpers would do!

  • A ball

You could recap some of previous letters during the activity. Write them in chalk on a fence or a wall. Say a letter then see if your child can find it and aim the ball at the letter. Alternatively get them to aim at any of the letters and say the letter sound if they hit one.

Hear it and say it

As they play talk about what they are doing with the ball. What does kick start with? Sound out kick e.g. k-i-ck. Tell them that it starts with a k sound and ends with a k sound.

See it and say it

Write k on the floor and use something to make a goal e.g. cones or jumpers! Can they kick the ball over the k to score a goal? Can they make the k sound as they kick the ball?

Explain that sometimes two letters work together to make one sound. This is called a digraph. Write the letter c so that it now says ck. Explain that the k sound at the end of kick is made using the ck digraph. It makes the same k sound as the letter k. Can they kick the ball over the ck to score a goal? Can they make the ck sound as they kick the ball?

You could continue to play and create goals using different letters.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
