m - pick 'n' mix

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in Reception will be learning to:

  • Develop storylines in their pretend play. (Expressive Arts and Design)

  • Develop their small motor skills so that they can use a range of tools competently, safely and confidently. Suggested tools: pencils for drawing and writing, paintbrushes, scissors, knives, forks and spoons. (Physical Development)

What you could use:

  • sweets - real or pretend e.g. pop poms/beads

  • paper bags/bowls

  • tongs/spoon

  • till

After using money to learn about the letter m we decided to set up a shop! We set up a pick 'n' mix stand and pretended we were going to the cinema. Benji decided that he wanted to be the person that sold the sweets and stood behind the counter. We talked about not touching the money and the sweets and how we could use the tongs to pick up the sweets instead.

We put a selection of sweets in pots including milk bottles and dolly mixture. We talked about which sweets started with an m sound and which ones didn't.

I told Benji that each sweets cost 1p. I spent 10p and picked 10 sweets. Benji used some tongs to pick up the sweets and put them into the paper sweet bag. As he put the sweets in the bag we practised counting.

After we bought our sweets from the pick 'n' mix shop we headed downstairs to watch a movie. We thought about what movies we knew that started with m. We came up with Moana and Mighty Pups then ended up watching something that didn't begin with m!

He loved this activity so much and so did I. It developed so many skills and ended up with us sitting down and relaxing on the sofa! Win win!

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
