Reading

Cut out some coin shapes and write the following words on them.

Words:

fur (f-ur)

burn (b-ur-n)

burp (b-ur-p)

curl (c-ur-l)

hurt (h-ur-t)

surf (s-ur-f)

turn (t-ur-n)

Put the coins in a purse and ask your child to pick a coin out. Ask them to sound out the word and then blend to read the word e.g. t-ur-n, turn.

Spelling

Draw sound lines and sound buttons on the other side of the coins. Put a dot for single letters and a line for digraphs/trigraphs e.g. surf would have a dot for the s, a line for the ur digraph and a dot for the f.

Choose a coin, read the word and turn it over. See if your child can sound out the word then write the sounds above the sound buttons and lines. Turn it over to check if they are correct.

Writing

Choose one of the words and put it into a sentence. Start by saying the sentence out loud, counting the number of words. Then see if your child can write the sentence down. You can support your child by getting them to repeat the sentence to work out which word goes next.

They may spell some words incorrectly - this is ok! Encourage them to write down the sounds they can hear e.g. bord for board. At this stage, we are looking for plausible attempts at spelling, where your child uses the sounds they know.
