e - water pistol trunks

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Children in reception will be learning to:

  • Form lower-case and capital letters correctly. (Literacy)

What you need:

  • Water pistol

  • Flashcard with an e written on

We listened to the Elephant's Lullaby song then we talked elephant's trunks. The long nose that elephants have is called a trunk. Elephants use their trunk to smell and to breath. They use their trunks to spray water on themselves. Elephants use their long trunks to smell their food and lift it up into their mouth.

Explain that we are going to pretend a water gun is a trunk. We can move it around and spray water like an elephant.

Say it and write it

Show the letter e flashcard and show them where to start. Explain that the elephant starts in the middle, pushes the water straight across, then all the way around. Use the water pistol to write the letter e in the air or on the ground.

Extension - You could also have a go at making trumpets using paper or card. Then you could use the trumpets to make sounds like the elephants do with their trunks.

If you have a go at this activity and share any photos on social media I would love to see them. Please tag @miniwritersclub and let me know how you get on.
