Egg Hunt Clues

Updated: Apr 17

If you are planning an egg hunt, why not add some reading by including written clues (scroll down for a printable version).

When my daughter was in Reception, I made an Easter egg hunt for the garden. I used words containing sounds she had been taught so she could have a go at reading the clues herself.

I added sound lines to show where two/three letters were working together to make one sound.

I hid the clues inside plastic eggs and hid them around the garden. When she read the clue it led to an egg, which contained the next clue.

You could hide a small chocolate in with each clue or have a prize to find at the end.

I have created a set of word banks for each phase in Reception and Year 1, so you can make your own clues for your child to read.

I have also included some ready-made clues that you can download and print.

There are three versions of the clues:

  • If your child is a confident reader, choose the set of clues without sound lines and buttons

  • If they need a little support, use the sound buttons and lines to help them spot digraphs/trigraphs within the word. The words are colour codes to show which sounds are from each phase.

  • If your child finds reading tricky, you could use the clues with the picture to give them a little more support.

Happy egg hunting!
