Egg Hunt Blending

April's phonics session is Easter themed and contains Phase 3 and 4 sounds and words taught in Reception. You can watch the video and join in or create your own version at home using any sounds and words.

In the video, I rearrange the sounds to make words. Can your child call out to say whether it's a real word or a nonsense word?

To create your own version at home hide some sounds around the room or outside. You could put them inside eggs if you have them but don't worry if not. I used magnetic letters but your could write the sounds on pieces of paper. The sounds chosen should be able to make a CVC word (consonant, vowel, consonant) e.g. ch, i, ck which make chick.

When your child has found all of the eggs, see if they can rearrange the letters to create a word. It doesn't matter if they make a nonsense word at first. Sound it out and blend it and discuss if it is a real word or not. If it's not, see if they can swap any of the letters to make a real word.

Play again, hiding a different set of letters to create another CVC word.

Extend: If your child is confident making CVC words, you could hide 4 sounds and get them to make a CVCC word (consonant vowel, conconant, consonant) e.g. nest.

These are the magnetic letters that I used inside the plastic Easter eggs.
