Games Night: Phase 2 - Set 1

Do you ever get bored of trying to find something to watch on the TV or trying to find a movie that everyone wants to watch? I decided to try to have more games nights instead. It has been a great way to relax, although I don't think I will ever hear the end of the time he scored two Yahtzees in one game! Now I have created some downloadable Phonics Game Night packs so we can have games night with the children too. These are available to download for MWC Subscribers.

I wanted to start a games night with my children. We have a few games that they really enjoy like Dobble, Uno and Connect 4. When Sophie started school I decided to add a phonics spin to some of our games.

Now Benji has started school I decided to create some of my own phonics games to play. I created a set of games for the Phase 2 Set 1 sounds and high-frequency words. We tested them out earlier this week and they were a hit with both the adults and the children! You could also play these games with sounds and words from different phases.

You can download the games below:

Game 1 - The Sock Game

The sock game was a fun way to practise the letter sounds.

Support - If your child isn't confident with the letter sounds, let another play choose the letter and take it in turns to throw the socks instead of throwing them all at once. This means they can see which is the letter that matches the sound before they need to throw their sock. This will help them to recognise the letters.

Extend - Ask your child to pick the letter sound. This means they will select a letter and say the sound. You could also play with word cards instead of letters.

Game 2 - Say It Game

We used buzzers to press when they saw the target word or sound but you could see who is the first to tap the table or to call out a word e.g. their own name when they see the target sound/word. This game is fun when the pace is quite quick but Benji found it tricky to read the words as quickly as the other players. Hearing other people read the words is still a great way to help him become familiar with the high frequency words that he needs to learn by sight.

Support - Take it in turns to read a word so the pace is slower. Score a point if the target word is shown on your turn.

Extend - Include some decoable words from the words lists in the Phonics Club.

Game 3 - Squares

There are 3 different versions on the squares board included in the pack. The first board contains the letters s, a, t, p, the second board contains high frequency words and the last board is blank so you can add your own letters/words.
