Race to build a word

What you need:

  • Cardboard/paper

  • Pen

Cut some cardboard into squares and write a letter on each piece so that you have enough to spell all of the words on your spelling list. Cut out strips of card and write the whole word on them or use flashcards if you have them. We used tricky words for this game but you could also play with decodable words which can be sounded out (these are the ones in the Phase 2-4 pack with a stripe along the bottom).

To play:

Place the word cards in a pile and place them face down. Mix up the letter cards and spread them out face down.

Each player should pick a word card from the pile and place it in front of them facing up.

Take turns to pick a letter tile. If you need the letter for your word, place it next to your word card. If you don't need it, put it back.

The first person to make their word wins the round. Choose another spelling and play again.
