Multiplication Check & Online Practice Tool

Updated: Dec 8, 2025

If your child’s in Year 4, you’ve probably heard whispers about the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). But what exactly is it and how can you help your child prepare without it turning into a big stress?

What is the MTC?

The Multiplication Tables Check is a short online test that all Year 4 pupils in England take in June. The aim is simple: to see if children know their times tables up to 12 × 12, which is a really important part of the maths curriculum.

What does the test look like?

  • 25 quick-fire questions

  • 6 seconds to answer each one

  • The whole thing takes less than 5 minutes

  • Done on a computer or tablet

So really, it’s more like a speedy quiz than a big exam.

Why is it important?

Times tables are the building blocks for so much of maths: division, fractions and problem-solving. If children can recall them quickly, everything else feels easier. The check is just there to highlight who might need a bit of extra support so they don’t fall behind later on.

How can I help my child?

  • Practise little and often. A few minutes a day makes a huge difference (think flashcards over breakfast, or a game in the car).

  • Keep it fun. The Times Tables Club has printable activities, quick games, and even an online tool that mirrors the real test so you child can practise in a low-pressure way.

  • Start working on times tables before they reach Year 4.

This is what is covered in each of the year groups in England.

Year 2:  recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables

Year 3: recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables

Year 4: recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12

It works just like the real thing, but with options to make it gentler to begin with:

  • Start with practice mode and no timer.

  • When your child feels ready, try the 10-second timer (a bit more generous than the real test).

  • Build up to the 6-second timer to match the official check.
