This game is a great way to introduce the new graphemes in Phase 5a. Graphemes are the letters that are used to represent the sound. In Phase 5a the graphemes are a new way to represent some of the sounds they learnt during phases 2 and 3.
Phase 5a - the same sound, different letters.
On the phase 5 ay card you can see the Phase 3 ai sound is written in the top left corner to help children and parents to link the two sounds.
For this activity, I wrote words containing each of the sounds on pieces of card (I used an old cereal box). I filled the lid from the phonics box with kinetic sand and hid them words.
Sophie had to find the words, then blend the sounds to read the words. Then she matched them to the phase 3/5 flashcard.
At the end we looked to see if there was a pattern. We noticed if the sound is in the middle it was ai and if it was at the end it was ay.
Words you could use:
Phase 3 - rain, pain, mail, sail.
Phase 4 - claim, trail, snail, stain, plain
Phase 5 - play, stray, day, clay, spray.
The activities in this blog post can be adapted and used with any sound that your child is learning. Alternative sounds and words can be found on the Phonics Club page.
